Their days will be filled with rigor and the pursuit of excellence within an environment which makes them challenge their peers, their teachers, and most importantly themselves. Our curriculum should stimulate the deepest of reasoning and critical thought, allowing our students not only to wonder what they will learn but to what end is their learning? What greater purpose or calling will my learning lead? How can I use my learning to make the world a better place? Empowerment and responsibility make
up the cornerstones of the Milken educational experience. While the Milken curriculum will prepare students for their years in college and university, the curriculum invariably goes far beyond those goals. Through the curriculum our graduates depart feeling able to ask the critical questions which make them not only students for life, but academic leaders.
The course of study a child chooses during their years at Milken accounts for 80-90% of their involvement with school. Simply by the nature of the requirements for graduation (Science, English, Jewish studies, Hebrew, electives in the arts, physical education) our students’ primary commitment of time and energy is to the classroom. It is therefore vital that we all work collaboratively, parents, students, deans, advisors and teachers to help forge the most challenging and developmentally appropriate program for a Milken student.
Jason Ablin, a product of the Lower East Side in New York City, received his AB degree from Vassar College with a double major in Political Science and English, and his Masters degree in English from NYU. He also spent two years at the prestigious Shappell’s Yeshiva in Jerusalem studying Jewish Law and Philosophy. Before coming to MCHS, he chaired the English Department at Yeshiva University High School of Los Angeles for six years. This will be Mr. Ablin’s 14th year working in Jewish education.
As the Director of Curriculum and Integration, Mr. Ablin guides the academic development and standards for the school, 7-12 th grades. He works with department chairs on curriculum articulation and creative possibilities in Integration between General and Jewish Studies. He is also responsible for the Hiring of faculty and staff as well as the New Teacher Induction Program.
